Topic: Artificial Intellgence, Research Productivity And Information Behaviour Of Librarians In Academic Libraries In Lagos Nigeria
Description:
Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used in academic libraries to support discovery, reference, and information services. However, how these tools influence librarians’ information behaviour and whether they enhance research productivity remains under-examined, particularly in academic libraries in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Aims/Objectives
This study aims to explore the relationship between AI use and research productivity among librarians, focusing on their information behaviour in academic libraries in Lagos State. Specifically, it will:
(1) identify AI applications librarians use for information work,
(2) examine changes in information-seeking, evaluation, and use patterns due to AI, and
(3) assess perceived impacts of AI on research productivity (e.g., output quality, efficiency, collaboration, and dissemination).
Methodology
The study will adopt a qualitative descriptive design. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with purposively selected academic librarians in Lagos State who use AI tools or AI-enabled library platforms. Interviews will be recorded (with consent), transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis to identify patterns related to information behaviour and productivity impacts.
Expected Result
The study is expected to reveal that AI adoption reshapes librarians’ information behaviour by accelerating searching, summarising, and evidence tracking, while also introducing concerns such as accuracy, bias, and ethical use. It is also anticipated that AI will be perceived to improve research productivity through reduced workload and improved access to relevant information.
Contribution to Knowledge/Society
Findings will support librarians and university administrators in designing AI-informed policies, training programs, and service models that strengthen librarian scholarship and improve academic information support in Nigeria.

Impact of Digital Transformation on Service Delivery by Library Staff in University of Ilorin, Kwara State
This study examines the impact of digital transformation on service delivery by library staff at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State. Employing a total enumeration survey method, data were gathered from all 114 library staff using a validated, self-structured questionnaire. The findings indicate that 76% of respondents acknowledge significant improvements in service efficiency due to digital tools, particularly in cataloging, reference services, and user support. However, challenges such as inadequate digital infrastructure 68% and limited digital literacy among staff 59% were identified as barriers to optimal service delivery. The study emphasizes the critical role of continuous training programs and improved technological infrastructure in enhancing digital competence and service quality. Additionally, 81% of respondents advocate for institutional policies promoting regular workshops and collaborations with ICT experts. The study concludes that targeted investments in digital resources and staff development are crucial for maximizing the benefits of digital transformation in library services. It recommends prioritizing ICT infrastructure upgrades and implementing tailored training initiatives to ensure sustainable advancements in service delivery.
