Contraction of Content Question Items in the Yoruba Language
Human languages across the world, such as Yoruba, tend
to make some elements in their constructions phonologically null. With few
exceptions, it is observed that the composition of the content phrase in Yoruba
and its dialects is composed of two elements. The first element takes the
semantic shape of the content morpheme, while the second element expresses the
question type. While most dialects of Yoruba still retain this process, SY has
more contractions that could make one assume that it has just one element for
content questions in such constructions. A possible contraction strategy of
Standard Yoruba content particles is given in this paper based on descriptive
analysis. Judging from the data examined, it is assumed that the question particle
in SY is the contracted form of ewo, which is wo/o. This contracted form is
either used as an independent morpheme or it is merged with the other part of
the string of question phrases, and in some cases, as will be shown in the
paper, it is assumed that the question particle is covertly represented.
