Comparative analysis of the Human resources Management Practicies and organisational Performance in Nigerian Universities

The global space has witnessed the growing importance of human resource management (HRM) in both private and public life. This dynamic climate has brought in its wake of liberalization, changing technologies, growth in knowledge and advances in information technology is offering the managers a complex and challenging situation. This research focuses on the comparative analyses of HRM practices in the public and private universities in Nigeria. The study selected HRM practices such as HR planning, recruitment, selection, training and development, performance appraisal, compensation and industrial relations. The university plays a fundamental role in economic and social development of any nation. The employees contribute in large measure to the performance of the universities. The study adopted human capital theory. Mixed method, through the triangulation of quantitative and qualitative research approaches was used for this study. Cross sectional survey and exploratory research designs were employed. The finding of this study among others is that certain areas such as the human resource practices are needed to be improved upon for better and effective university administration in Nigeria. The study concluded that improving administrative capacity especially, those aspects dealing with human resource, appears to be the most challenging but imperative for improving the effectiveness of the Nigerian University System.
