Current Research

Islamic Economic Ethics and Sustainable Peace: Income Redistribution, Inequality, and Conflict in Nigeria

Research Details

This study examines the relationship between income inequality and conflict incidence in Nigeria, with a focus on the redistributive role of Islamic finance in promoting sustainable income distribution recent scholarly works, the research critically reviews literature linking inequality to socio-political instability, highlighting the economic mechanisms through which disparities in wealth exacerbate conflict dynamics. Using secondary data from the World Bank, National Bureau of Statistics, and ACLED, we conduct a time-series correlation and regression analysis for the period 2010–2023. The findings reveal an exceptionally strong positive correlation (r= 0. 994) between the national Gini coefficient and annual conflict events, with regression results indicating that a 1-point increase in the Gini index is associated with a statistically significant rise in conflict incidents. This empirical evidence underscores the economic costs of inequality and the urgent need for inclusive development policies. The study recommends strengthening Islamic financebased redistributive mechanisms, expanding social safety nets, and addressing structural economic disparities as part of a broader conflict prevention strategy. By integrating an Islamic economic framework with empirical conflict analysis, this research provides a novel contribution to the literature on sustainable development and peacebuilding in emerging economies, particularly within Muslim-majority contexts such as Nigeria.
